시애틀에서 I-90 고속도로를 따라 자동차로 5시간 거리에 위치한 동부 워싱턴주의 중심지 스포켄은 차분한 분위기의 교육도시다. 서북미 내륙 최대 도시로 캐나다국경에서 남쪽으로 110마일 떨어져 있는 스포켄은 시애틀에서는 271마일 거리로 자동차로 4시간 정도 걸린다.
1810년 데이빗 톰슨이 개척한 도시로 이후에 유럽 이민자들이 이주해왔으며 록키산맥과 캐스케이드산맥 중간의 모피 거래중심지 역할을 했다.
19세기 초에 서북미 내륙에서 금과 은이 발견되면서 스포켄지역은 미국내에서 생산성이 가장 높은 광산지역으로 부상했다. 하지만 초기의 천연자원 중심의 산업에서 지금은 하이텍과 바이오텍 등 다양한 산업이 발달해 있다.
스포켄이라는 도시명은 '태양의 아들'이라는 뜻을 갖고있는 인디언부족 '스포켄'에서 왔으며 1881년 시가 설립됐다. 2010년 센서스에 따르면 스포켄 인구는 20만8,916명으로 워싱턴주에서 두번째로 큰 도시이며 서북미 전체로도 시애틀과 포틀랜드에 이어 3번째로 큰 도시다. 인종별로는 백인이 전체인구의 92.1%를 차지하고 있으며 아시안은 3.7%, 아메리칸 인디언 3.7% 그리고 흑인이 3.1%를 차지하고 있다.
한국전쟁의 첫 미군 희생자가 바로 스포켄 출신으로 시 당국이 다운타운의 아름다운 호숫가에 그의 추모비를 건립하는 등 한국과는 남다른 인연을 맺고 있다.
지난 70년대 초부터 한국 이민자들이 하나둘 정착하기 시작하면서 형성된 스포켄 한인사회는 현재 총 1,500여명을 포용하는 커뮤니티로 성장했다. 스포켄은 1974년 세계박람회를 계기로 현대화가 가속화됨에 따라 시애틀 등지에서 한인들이 모여들기 시작, 대부분 자영업으로 안정된 생활기반을 구축했다. 스포켄에는 순복음교회, 침례교회, 천주교회 등 모두 5개의 한인교회가 있다.
스포켄 지역은 워싱턴주립대학, 곤자가대학, 워드워스대학 등이 포진하고 있는 교육도시로 이스턴 워싱턴 대학은 동국대, 곤자가대학은 서강대, 워드워스대학은 계명대, 숭실대와 각각 자매결연을 맺고 있어 이들 한국대학의 유학생들이 많이 오는 편이다.
