한인 매릴린 스트릭랜드가 시장으로 있는 타코마시는 워싱턴주에서 서번째로 큰 도시로 커맨스먼트 베이를 끼고 있는 해안에 자리잡은 생활환경이 쾌적한 인구 20만의 국제도시이다.
타코마시 자료에 따르면 시의 인구는 2003년 현재 19만6,300명이며 인종별로는 백인이 76%, 흑인 7.2%, 아시안이 6.4%를 차지하고 있다. 주민들의 평균 연간소득은 4만5,610달러(1999년 현재)이다.
1884년에 세워진 타코마시는 초기에는 목재도시였으나 현재는 현대상선이 취항하는 국제적인 항구도시로 아시아 등 전세계에서 들어오는 화물을 처리하고 있다.
